Indii.org earlier released its Tintii Photoshop plugin for color on black-and-white, color popping, selective color, saturation contrast and subtle hue and lightness adjustments. Its most recent release is Urban Lightscape, which employs some of Tintii’s core technology but shifts the emphasis to correcting exposure, making localised brightness adjustments and adding light effects to photos.
While Photoshop’s global image adjustment capabilities are justly renowned, photos typically also require localized adjustments. At this point users must be adept at selecting the areas of the image they want to adjust, a process that can be non-trivial for many images. In contrast, Urban Lightscape employs a deceptively simple interface, providing a drag-and-drop method of placing control points on a photo, with edge detection localizing and interpolating adjustments around and between these points. Softening harsh shadows, fixing overexposed skies, lightening backlit foregrounds and creating HDR-like effects are among the capabilities of the software.
Urban Lightscape 1.1 is available for Windows, Mac and Linux, with the Windows and Mac versions also available as plugins for Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Photoshop Elements and Corel Paint Shop Pro. The application is priced at $4.99, with the plugin/app package selling for $19.99. It’s free and open source on Linux. More information and a trial version is available on the Indii.org site.
